I really enjoyed reading this short story by Scott Standards. Standards uses his own life experiences to compare men verses what woman think about men. The word "men", to Scott, meant physical work. A man that works all day long while the wife is at home taking care of the children. However, to the girls at college, a "man" meant a successful human being that didn't involve no physical pain or work.

  2. The fact that such an early age Scott Standards knew how hard men worked and went into such vivid detail is amazing. He compared men and women's jobs and he was right, men do more labor and more physical work than women do.

  3. I very much enjoyed reading this short story by Scott Sanders. I agree with him on men and women being hard workers and providers. Men at a young age have always been told to work hard and provide for your family. And for women its always been you need to stay home and keep a happy family. For men and women its always been a different view on what was a hard worker But as time evolved in some way men and women are known as equal hard workers, but is that really true for women?? Untill this day women still have a hard time proving themselves because of discrimination.

  4. After reading the short story by Scott Sander, it had almost the same meaning as the story Joan Didion wrote about Georgia O'Keeffe. Back then and even today some people, men and women are given a spot on how their lives should be like. The type of people they should become based on their gender or from where they come from. Almost everyone wants to be able to explore their abilities, live at peace knowing who they are, and be able to control what their lives would become. In Scott and Georgia's life to me they don't want to become what their society or culture has placed them to be, because of their gender. But to become something greater that fulfills their own lives.

  5. I agree with Scott Sanders when he says that men are the hard workers and make the money for the family, where as women stay home and take care of the house. I can also go against that though because at my house we don't have gender roles, everyone is responsible for the same things. I guess it's just the way you are raised and the things you see your parents do. I think the author’s message is that you shouldn't judge anyone based on your beliefs on how society operates because that's like a man assuming that a woman should be behind a stove just because she is a woman.

I did not enjoy this essay very much; i understand why he might've thought it was necessary to use so many descriptions of the different men he knew growing up.However, i think it was long and drawn out. Could he not have just said he shares the desire certain woman feel for the position of power ?

  7. Sanders expresses the meaning of hard work as he describes the men who work their sweat, heart and tears just to provide enough food and money for their families, while the women on the other hand; are the ones who hold the family unity at home.

I liked how Sanders viewed how hard men work, & how men & women in society have their own set in occupation in the world. Although men seem to have "higher ranks" in society for the work they do & women are seem as the "lower" men do seem to have harder jobs. I do believe that both women & men's jobs are important in society & neither should be seen as a higher or lower job, because they're both needed in society. I like that Sanders shared the wish with women about wanting to have a high position job.

The phrase "the men i knew" was repeated multiple times and grabbed my attention. Sanders would compare and contrast men to women and how their differences are in the working area. Even though I don't agree with everything Sanders has to say, his short story was interesting to read.

It was interesting to read Sanders story. His descriptive story gave me a good mental image of men's work and society during that time. Different perspectives make a difference on the way people make think or feel about something.

The author says, "Men wore out sooner" what this means is that men were completely exhausted, tired, etc. which would make their appearance look much older than the women because they weren't exposed to any kind of hard work like men were. Sanders began to notice how men did all the work while women stayed home taking care of the kids. He did not think it was fair, however, the people he met in college had a very different point of view. Although, nowadays any men and women can work in any field they want because we all share equal rights.

Scott Russell Sanders made a point to say we all see things differently and in this case it is men. He see's them as hard workers, being able to do labor work and the women viewed them differently, more less in doing labor work. He made an interesting comparison on what we view our fathers as or generally men as.

Sanders talked about the different roles that men and women played in society during the early 1900's. What he saw was that men were overworked. When he moved to a new place and heard women say that they envied the life of men, he then began to observe a different point of view. He realized women as well as men struggled to find satisfaction in their everyday lives.I think his essay really pointed out to observe both sides of a situation before jumping to conclusions.

  14. I enjoyed reading "The Men We Carry in Our Minds", Sanders made points that even I as a man never took into consideration. He had one perspective of men while women from upper class had another, women only saw the rich men as the only kind of man and did not think of the lower class and how different their lives were.

I found this essay captivating. He addressed many good points. To me it made me feel like the opportunity we have of attending a university is a blessing. Men back then had it difficult and had to support their families.

  16. I found Sanders essay to be interesting. The way he describes men being all worked out really shows how men worked hard.I like how he compared both men and women jobs showing that each individual works hard.

  17. I believe Sanders did not truly realize how hard men worked to support their families until he got to college. He realized how ignorant the wealthier students were when it came to a man's life. They believed they got the best jobs and women had it tough in life.

I think this was an interesting essay. In this essay the author observed how men are doing all the hard works, but when he went to college, where only rich people of society could attend at that time, he was shocked by the picture that women had of men.
As the essay continues, the author mentions how unfair is life for both men and women.

  19. I find this essay very interesting, Scott Russell Sanders does not write for pity. He wrote this essay to tell people that no mater who you are or where your from that doesn't decide your faith YOU do. I can relate to this essay because I have many friends who didn't move go to college after high school because their parents never made it so they thought the same.

People, in general, grow up in different environments. Everybody sees and experiences different events in their lives. What I see with my eyes may not be what my neighbor sees with his/hers. I believe that a person's upbringing has a lot of influence on the way they think about the outside world. I also believe that people can accept what they already "know" and limit themselves or go out and become someone stronger and wiser. Sanders wanted more than to be a "toiler" or a "warrior". He took his experiences and used it as fuel to a better life. To his surprise, the women he envied growing up, were also striving for the same goal as him. This is why you never judge a book by its cover.

  21. The reading was actually very interesting. The theme of this written story kind of related to me in a way of how I think the way things are here in the present. The misunderstanding of how others feel seems to be common among the people of this time. To be truly honest it seems that everybody will always misunderstand each other no matter what the circumstance. Technology and networking have caused many misunderstandings to take place amongst "ourselves" and I believe "we" need to begin to understand each other as a human being.

  23. Scotts Sanders' essay was filled with imagery which made me imagine how the farmers looked while working. His words made me analyze both the role of women and men to see which gender has the toughest job. But I decided that their role in working is equal, men and women try to through each other down when in reality the should help one another in order to reach those high goals everyone has. We all deserve an opportunity, there should not be any discrimination between the opposite sex.
