Welcome

Dear Students,

I am looking forward to spending the next ten weeks with all of you, but I understand that the feeling may not be mutual. That's okay. All I ask is that you apply yourself diligently to assigned work and remain open. I feel confident that we will all be more careful readers and competent writers by the end of the quarter, and, if we remain open, who knows where the readings and discussions will lead us. I expect great things.

Today's reminder: Do not miss class in the first two weeks or more than three times throughout the quarter. I will have no choice but to fail you regardless of the work you make up for the days you were absent.

Before class on Wednesday: Please listen to the following short Youtube clip and respond in the comments section. Stephen Fry Kinetic Typography

The gentlemen was very well spoken, and made some very good points. However i disagree with his rant on "correctness" in an interview. I was extremely amused by the animation, and i felt that his accent made this video all the more interesting. Also, i found myself having to look up alot of the words he used; such as pedant (which i never even guessed there would be a word to describe people of that nature).

Stephen Fry hit many interesting points with today's usage of words. The vocabulary that is now used is very random and strange. Children begin to speak improper English very early during their life and stick to it which can affect during school when required to write essays, for job interviews or resumes. Even though Fry stated there is no right or wrong way in English, there is still a proper and correct way of speaking and writing.
What I found amusing was his use of creativity to form the word "language".

I agree with Stephen many people don't use proper language. They want to take the easy way and use improper words. Stephen's video was very interesting, it keeps you entertained. I like the fact how he actually uses proper language in his video.

  5. Overall, he has a good point. He does get carried away when he starts criticizing about people using language correctly. Language changes overtime, especially with this generation today, so it's not like anyone really cares to speak formally since growing up all they're surrounded by is "wrong language". For the most part, I agree with Stephen Fry and his points because it's always appealing and enjoyable to conversate with someone who appreciates and uses good language.

  6. I agree with most of what Stephan Fry has to say about how language has been used and thought of during these times, but language is just language and to every individual person they have their own keen sense of a tasteful and beautiful language. The video was outstanding about half-way through, but the criticizing of others with how they think of language was slightly off-topic and very demeaning although it did cut to the point.

I agree with Stephen when he states that there is no right or wrong language, but I do believe that there is a time and place for everything. I really liked how the video was put together. It might have made me a little dizzy trying to keep up, but overall I thought it was a very interesting video.

  9. I found this video very entertaining, the structure of it had me focus on what Stephan Fry was talking about. I agree with him when he says a lot of people use high vocabulary to make others feel lower than them, so that they feel as if they are superior. I also agree with Stephen when he states that words are taken for granted, they can be use for so much more than just simply communicating.

I agree with Stephen Fry because he does make really good points about "right" and "wrong" language. People don't use the proper language at the right time and i think that's why it looks bad when they say something there not suppose too. But this was a very interesting video, i enjoyed it very much.

I found this video quite interesting. Stephen Fry brought up a lot of valid points in how people use proper & improper language nowadays. I agree with his opinion, but believe that even though some may use improper language, we all know what is being said.

I completely agree with Stephen Fry. Most People think that when they use a broad vocabulary they are superior to others. I feel that it doesn't matter how well you know the the words your using, its how and when you use them that make them more effective.

This video reveals the way new generations use improper language and grammar and how it is criticized. I agree with Stephen Fry because there is no right or wrong language, although it is important we know when and how to use formal language and proper grammar. Informally language can be used when it is the right time, for example, when you're talking to a friend. There are many reasons why our language is changing, but the most controversial reason is texting. Texting is causing a decrease in the way we use proper grammar and spelling.
Overall, it was a very informative video.

  14. This video was very eye-opening. I agree with Stephen Fry when he said there is no "right" or "wrong" language. To me everyone should be able to express their minds the way they want to like Fry mentioned back then many famous poets used very different types of language and some people didn't find it proper to use words like that. To me language demonstrates who u are.

  15. Stepen Fry has made some good points.I agree when he says that there is no right or wrong language. While people are free to use language as they like, they should be aware of the times and places for formal and informal language.

Stephen Fry talks about the wrong use of language in today's society. I agree that many people or "pedants" as he calls them use language to talk badly of people, the media is a perfect example. He also talks about when applying for a job people dress up their language as they should dress up for the job. It is important to speak formally so you get your point across. He also says there are is no right or wrong language which I believe because with language you can express who you are.

  17. I think this was an interesting video. The animation was a good idea and it prevented me from getting bored when watching it. In this video Stephen Fry mentioned how language is used improperly today. I don't necessarily agree or disagree with his point, but I was interested in what he was saying.
